Noninvasive method for electrocardiogram recording in conscious rats: feasibility for heart rate variability analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pereira-Junior,Pedro P.; Marocolo,Moacir; Rodrigues,Fabricio P.; Medei,Emiliano; Nascimento,José H.M..
Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis consists in a well-established tool for the assessment of cardiac autonomic control, both in humans and in animal models. Conventional methods for HRV analysis in rats rely on conscious state electrocardiogram (ECG) recording based on prior invasive surgical procedures for electrodes/transmitters implants. The aim of the present study was to test a noninvasive and inexpensive method for ECG recording in conscious rats, assessing its feasibility for HRV analysis. A custom-made elastic cotton jacket was developed to fit the rat's mean thoracic circumference, with two pieces of platinum electrodes attached on its inner surface, allowing ECG to be recorded noninvasively in conscious, restrained rats (n=6). Time- and...

Nutrition experimentale: Problemes methodologiques lies a l'utilisation des microorganismes comme source trophique ArchiMer
Guidi, L.
The present study deals with technical problems encountered under lab conditions in studies of trophic relations between deposit-feeding invertebrates and microorganisms. Using 2 pure cultures of Pseudomonas and Navicula , it was shown that these microorganisms will attach to artificial (glass beads) and natural (sand grains) substrates. Best microbial attachment was observed on sand (up to 4.8 x 10 super(8) cells.g super(-1) dry wt.). The radioactive labelling of the microorganisms depends not only on the form under which the isotope ( super(14)C) is supplied to the cultures, but also on the time and the duration of the labelling. 70% of the isotope was incorporated in a stable manner by the diatoms. The bacteria incorporated, at most, 34% of the...

Observation on the bacteriology of fronts : some problems of methodology ArchiMer
Floodgate, G.d.; Lochte, K.; Egan, B..
The data obtained in surveys to investigate the bacteriological aspects of the biology of two contrasting frontal systems has shown that the Inherent homeostasis and the complexity of the environment, together with the Imprecision of the data, lead to biomass values that are difficult to interpret in terms of the physical factors governing the formation of fronts. Although biochemical measurements offer some promise of providing more reliable and less confusing information, the oeed to develop high precision methods that can be made very frequently is emphasised.

On-Farm Benchmarking: How to Do It and How to Do It Better AgEcon
Franks, J.R.; Collis, Jimi.
Benchmarking is the practice of establishing the relative performance of a business or enterprise against an appropriate standard, generally industry standards derived from a survey of farms. The Policy Commission into the Future of Farming and Food (2002) highlighted a need to spread and improve benchmarking on farms. The requirements of effective benchmarking are illustrated in a ten step framework. The ten steps illustrate the range of expertise and resources a manager requires before being able to justify allocating resources to benchmarking. A comparison of alternative farm surveys and methodologies used to collect, analyse and report industry standards illustrates the difficulties farmers can have in identifying appropriate, robust and accurate...

Outcome Mapping: A method for tracking behavioural changes in development programs AgEcon
Smutylo, Terry.
Outcome mapping is a methodology for planning, monitoring and evaluating development initiatives that aim to bring about social change. The process of outcome mapping helps a project team or program to be specific about the actors it targets, the changes it expects to see and the strategies it employs. Results are measured in terms of the changes in behaviour, actions or relationships that can be influenced by the team or program. The methodology is comprised of several tools, which can be adapted to different contexts. It enhances team and program understanding of change processes, improves the efficiency of achieving results and promotes realistic and accountable reporting.

Parametric farm performance and efficiency methodology: Stochastic Frontier Analysis AgEcon
Bakucs, Lajos Zoltan.
There is a continuously growing literature on the agricultural transformation in Central and Eastern European countries (see some surveys in Brooks and Nash 2002; Rozelle and Swinnen 2004). The research has focused on various aspects of transition, including land reform, farm restructuring, price and trade liberalisation, but even though Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data are now available for some years, there are only a few studies (e.g. Bakucs et al. 2010, Fogarasi and Latruffe, 2007, Baráth et al., 2009) focusing on Hungarian farm performance. The objective of this paper is to shed light on some methodological issues that are needed to study Hungarian farm performance. Here we consider one aspect of farm performance, namely technical efficiency....

Qualitative Research: A Grounded Theory Example and Evaluation Criteria AgEcon
Bitsch, Vera.
The qualitative research paradigm, although occasionally applied, is not widely discussed in agribusiness and agricultural economics literature. The primary goals of this paper are (a) to present insights into qualitative research approaches and processes by outlining grounded theory as an example of a systematic and rigorous qualitative approach, and (b) to discuss criteria for scientific rigor applicable to qualitative research. In addition, assessing qualitative research is demonstrated by using a published example.

Quantitative variables applied to phenological studies of Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh (Phaeophyceae - Fucales) from Ilha Grande Bay, State of Rio de Janeiro Rev. Bras. Bot.
Széchy,Maria Teresa M. de; Galliez,Maron; Marconi,Márcia I..
The suitability of quantitative variables for phenological studies was evaluated in a population of the brown seaweed Sargassum vulgare from "Praia das Gordas", Angra dos Reis, Ilha Grande Bay, state of Rio de Janeiro. From June 1998 to May 1999, twenty adult individuals were randomly sampled at bimonthly intervals. Fifteen variables related to the vegetative and reproductive development of perennial and non-perennial parts of the individuals were quantified. Variables related to the non-perennial parts were more useful than those related to the perennial parts, because they showed a clear variation over the year. Vegetative development declined from June to October, and increased from October to February, when maximum median values of thallus height,...

Quick Test for Detecting Glyphosate-Resistant Ryegrass Seeds Planta Daninha
SCHMITZ,M.F.; ZANDONÁ,R.R.; VARGAS,A.A.M.; GARCIA,J.R.; TUNES,L.V.M.; AGOSTINETTO,D..
ABSTRACT: The commercialization of ryegrass seeds with the presence of resistant biotypes is a serious issue that increses the dispersion of resistance to new areas without this problem. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a quick test to detect susceptible and resistant seeds to the glyphosate herbicide in order to identify contaminated seed lots with glyphosate resistance. Three experiments were carried out, one in greenhouse and the other two in the seed laboratory. First, the resistance factor (RF) was determined by a dose-response curve experiment in biotypes suspected to be resistant and susceptible to glyphosate. Then, the germination test was conducted with the selected biotypes under increasing glyphosate rates (0, 3.5, 6.9, 13.9, 27.8, 55.5,...

Reduction du nitrate dans les sediments marins. Comparaison des activites mesurees in vitro et in situ ArchiMer
Esteves, J; Bonin, P; Blanc, F; Mille, G; Bertrand, J.
In vitro nitrate reduction in hydrocarbon-polluted marine sediments has been studied by flow-through system. By analysing the rate of nitrate comsumption as a function of nitrate concentration the authors determined the Michaelis-Menten kinetics parameters. (km = 330 mu M; vax = 2.0 mu M/g super(-1)/h super(-1). The authors found a value of 60 mu M/m super(-2)/h super(-1) for the rate of in vitro nitrate consumption derived from the above kinetic parameters and from the nitrate concentration in the sediment. In parallel a value of 67.4 mu M/m super(-2)/h super(-1) was found for the rate of nitrate consumption under in situ conditions. The great similarity between both results would favor the in vitro technique as a valid and more convenient one.

Relation entre la densite des microstries et le rayon de l'otolithe compatible avec le modele de von Bertanlanffy: application a Lutjanus sebae (Cuvier, 1828) aux Seychelles OceanDocs
Chauvelon, P.; Bach, P..
The age study of fishes using daily growth increments DGI observations is made from: 1- either the exhaustive determination of increments, 2- or the calculation of daily growth increments density for different otolith zones between the nucleus and the margin edge of otolith, the width of increments being presumed constant for each zone. To apply the first method, increments may be readable individually from the nucleus to the margin edge of otolith. This is a very time consuming operation. It can cause miscalculation of increments and errors of the age estimation. The second method, called "DGI density method" is based on the decrease of the increment width in relation to the slowing down of the growth phenomena. The more used approach according to this...

Daily growth increments (DGI) density - otolith radius relationship according to the von Bertanlanffy's growth model: application to Lutjanus sebae (Cuvier, 1828) in Seychelles. Often, age determination of fishes is conducted from several parts (scales and otoliths for teleost fishes, vertebrae, spine, opercular bones, ...) displaying seasonal marks (annuli) associated with growth checks, which can be used for the estimation of individual age. Since Panella's (1971, 1974) discovery of the daily growth increments (DGI) in the teleost otoliths, age determination with DGI method has been used more and more on larval stages of both temperate and tropical species and juvenile and adult individuals of, principally, snapper and grouper species. The age study of...
